Under the leadership of Director Jodi Sassoon, M.D., CBLPath's Ophthalmic Pathology Department is staffed by 13 board certified pathologists specializing in ophthalmic pathology with the training, expertise and experience to ensure the most accurate diagnoses. Our pathologists are not only today’s leaders but also tomorrow's pioneers. We have worked hard to take the industry lead. We will work even harder to maintain it.

Carlos D. Urmacher, M.D., FCAP, FASCP

Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Carlos Urmacher is board certified in anatomic pathology and dermatopathology by the American Board of Pathology. After earning his M.D. degree from the University of Venezuela, Dr. Urmacher completed his pathology residency at Mount Sinai Hospital where he was Chief Resident. Subsequently, he completed his fellowship in surgical pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he was Chief Fellow and a member of the attending staff for 13 years. Notably, he completed his fellowship in dermatopathology under A. Bernard Ackerman, M.D. at New York University Medical Center. Dr. Urmacher has received numerous awards and has published more than 80 articles as well as 6 book chapters and monographs. In addition, he served on the editorial boards of the American Journal of Dermatopathology and the American Journal of Surgical Pathology. Dr. Urmacher is an active member in the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the New York Pathological Society and numerous other professional societies.

Jodi Sassoon, M.D.

Director of Ophthalmic Pathology
Dr. Jodi Sassoon is board certified in anatomic and clinical pathology. She received her M.D. degree from Jefferson Medical College and completed her residency training in anatomic and clinical pathology from The New York Hospital – Cornell Medical Center. Subsequently, Dr. Sassoon completed her fellowship in surgical pathology from Mount Sinai Medical Center. Dr. Sassoon gained extensive experience in ophthalmic pathology while serving on the staff at Manhattan Eye, Ear and Throat Hospital for 12 years, where she interpreted more than 70,000 ophthalmic specimens. The New York Department of Health has issued Dr. Sassoon its Certificate of Qualification – Anatomic and Clinical Laboratory Director. Dr. Sassoon has published multiple articles relating to ophthalmic pathology and is a member of the American Board of Pathology and the American Association of Ophthalmic Pathologists.
