Under the leadership of Director Karina Cymes, M.D., CBLPath's Gastrointestinal Pathology Department is staffed by 10 board certified pathologists specializing in gastrointestinal pathology with the training, expertise and experience to ensure the most accurate diagnoses. Our pathologists are not only today's leaders but also tomorrow's pioneers. We have worked hard to take the industry lead. We will work even harder to maintain it.

Carlos D. Urmacher, M.D., FCAP, FASCP

Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer
Dr. Carlos Urmacher is board certified in anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology. After earning his M.D. degree from the University of Venezuela, Dr. Urmacher completed his pathology residency at Mount Sinai Hospital where he was Chief Resident. Subsequently, he completed his fellowship in surgical pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where he was Chief Fellow and later responsible for gastrointestinal pathology as a member of the attending staff for 13 years. Dr. Urmacher has received numerous awards and has published more than 80 articles as well as 6 book chapters and monographs. In addition, he served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Surgical Pathology and on the Scientific Advisory Board of the World Health Organization Collaborating Center for the Prevention of Colorectal Cancer. Dr. Urmacher is an active member in the American Society of Clinical Pathologists, the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology, the New York Pathological Society and numerous other professional societies.

Karina Cymes, M.D.

Director of Gastrointestinal Pathology
Dr. Karina Cymes is board certified in anatomic pathology by the American Board of Pathology. She received her M.D. degree from the University of Buenos Aires School of Medicine in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Dr. Cymes completed her residency in anatomic pathology at Ramos Mejia Hospital in Buenos Aires and the Institute Gustave Roussy in Paris, France. Subsequently, she completed a 2-year fellowship in gastrointestinal pathology at Bichat-Claude Bernard and Beaujon Hospitals in Paris followed by a 3-year fellowship in gastrointestinal pathology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City. Dr. Cymes later completed additional residency training in anatomic pathology at New York University before completing fellowships in oncologic surgical pathology and gastrointestinal pathology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Prior to arriving at CBLPath, she served as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Dr. Cymes has published several articles on gastrointestinal pathology in peer-reviewed journals including Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Annals of Pathology and Modern Pathology.  She is a member of the United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology.
