Second Opinions
When a Second Opinion is of Primary Concern … CBLPath
In recent years there have been a number of articles written about the importance of obtaining a second opinion when patients receive a cancerous diagnosis. There are well documented instances of patients being diagnosed with cancer and going through extensive surgical procedures only to find out afterward that in fact the initial diagnosis of cancer was wrong. At CBLPath we understand the value of having a second opinion and that is why every cancerous diagnosis is reviewed by at least two expert pathologists before being sent to your doctor.
We recognize that getting your diagnosis right the first time is critical. That is why we follow a very strict quality process in diagnosing every specimen that comes through our doors. This process starts with hiring only specialty trained and experienced pathologists to interpret your specimens. We then have the ability to apply special stains as a second step to help confirm the diagnosis. Following this, each cancerous or unusual result goes through an internal second opinion process that we call consensus conference. At this conference, at least two specialized pathologists sit down at a multi-headed microscope to review your specimen and reach agreement on your diagnosis. Only after conducting this internal second opinion process do we render a final diagnosis on the specimens that we receive. In less than 1% of the cases, there may be a challenging diagnosis where we still want to obtain yet another opinion from an outside source. In this rare instance, we again go the extra mile to ensure accuracy by automatically sending your case to a world renowned thought leader for review before your result is finalized.
